Les circuits courts alimentaires suscitent un grand intérêt parce qu’ils mettent en lumière une agriculture moins industrielle, ancrée dans ses territoires et nourrissant sa communauté. Dans cet état des lieux, nous nous intéressons à leur poids économique, social et spatial dans le Québec d’aujourd’hui. Représentant encore une part marginale de l’offre et de la demande alimentaires, les fermes en circuits courts jouent pourtant un rôle qui se renforce dans l’établissement de la relève agricole. Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait intuitivement penser, ces fermes ne sont pas seulement concentrées dans les espaces périurbains, mais se déploient dans toutes les régions du Québec, contribuant même de façon significative à la renaissance de l’agriculture dans les régions dites éloignées. Pour autant, faire vivre ces fermes est un combat quotidien. Souvent vues comme fer de lance de la transition socio-écologique de l’agriculture, ces fermes ont à relever de nombreux défis pour offrir une option plus complète. Ces défis ne sont pas seulement ceux des agriculteurs et agricultrices qui choisissent cette voie. Ils sont ceux des consommateurs, des collectivités et de l’État qui, chacun à leur manière, peuvent accompagner leur développement.
