Abstract
The hallowed names of English adventurers by sea are integral to early Canadian history. For the Tudor age: John and Sebastian Cabot, pioneers to the Atlantic and Arctic flanks of the continent, the High Admiral Sir Martin Frobisher, thrice a voyager in pursuit of a passage to Cathay and India; Sir Francis Drake, Elizabethan claimant to the west coast of North America, Nova Albion; and John Davis, master hydrographer and scientific navigator, who in his arctic discoveries lighted Henry Hudson into his strait and William Baffin into his bay. The western ocean flank also became firmly delineated in consequence of the Navy&s;s presence. Wood, Kellett, Mayne, Pender and others filled in the spaces. But none did it so well as George Henry Richards, who from 1856 to 1863 superintended the drawing of 36 principal Admiralty charts and the preparation of sailing directions for Vancouver Island, British Columbia and Queen Charlotte Islands.
