Abstract
Chapter 4 introduces the concept of hyperfine interactions and their influence on the nuclear energy levels. This chapter concentrates on the hyperfine interaction resulting from the nuclear electric monopole moment. It is shown that this interaction produces a shift of the Mössbauer effect resonance and that this shift can be related to the valence state of the Mössbauer atom. The measurement of this shift provides considerable information about the interactions of the atomic electrons in the material.
