Abstract
Significance The Fed's quarterly survey of senior lending officers, released the same day, found that banks expect to tighten lending standards. This follows deposit flight during the banking turmoil that included three bank failures and growing fears of recession. Impacts Downturns in residential and especially commercial real estate markets will be a rising source of stress in the banking sector. The recent turmoil in banking will accelerate long-term consolidation trends, with large banks getting larger. Half the record US bank first-quarter profits came from one-off gains by the banks that bought SVB and Signature Bank assets from the FDIC.
