Au cours de la décennie qui suit la première guerre mondiale, apparaissent plusieurs troupes de théâtre d’amateurs qui, se réclamant de la pensée de Jacques Copeau, tentent de revitaliser l’art dramatique, en offrant un théâtre en rupture avec le théâtre commercial et en renouant avec un certain esprit communautaire. En 1923, la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste met sur pied les Soirées de famille, avec l’objectif de réunir ces troupes sur la scène du Monument- National. L’événement permet d’identifier et de confronter les divers projets réunis alors sous l’appellation de « Jeune Scène ».
