Abstract
D’où provient la loi prescrivant que les Autochtones soient définis par le sang, alors que l’ensemble des Canadiens l’est légalement, par le sol ? « Païens et Sauvages » n’étaient-ils pas condamnés à disparaître sans que cela ne se soit réalisé ? L’identité indienne ne se serait-elle pas diluée par adoption et surtout par intermariage avec les « blancs » ? Pourtant les sociétés autochtones n’ont-elles pas, de tout temps, intégré des étrangers (captifs, esclaves, membres d’autres ethnies, Européens) ? Le recul de la tradition et l’appropriation de la modernité auraient-ils conduit à une dilution identitaire ? Nous traitons ici du régime français. La seconde partie concernera les siècles ultérieurs.
