Abstract
Les historiens des découvertes géographiques n’ont pas encore tout dit des cartes coloniales françaises. Cette historiographie a longtemps été contaminée par un cadre conceptuel positiviste centré sur la primauté de la découverte géographique et le progrès graduel de la précision. Cet article propose une relecture de certaines cartes du voyage d’exploration de Jolliet et Marquette au Mississippi (1672- 1674). Il porte attention aux détails des cartes, à leur toponymie, aux absences, aux intérêts économiques des acteurs coloniaux ou métropolitains, enfin aux discours sur l’espace colonial. Avec l’envoi des cartes à la cour du roi de France, on assiste au déploiement d’un arsenal rhétorique visant à infléchir des politiques coloniales en matière d’expansion géographique, le tout inextricablement lié au commerce des fourrures.
