Abstract
Italians, at home or abroad, are usually characterized as glorying in their diversity, both regional and local.To Italo-Canadians we may add another dimension -the difference, variously expressed, between the old and the new immigrants.My comments are those of an old immigrant, who came to Canada nearly fifty-two years ago at the age of thirteen, and who has taught the children of the new immigrants.Emigration from post-unification Italy can be divided into three broad periods: pre-1914, pre-1940 and post-1945.Until 1899 more Italians went to South than to North America.The trend was reversed in 1900 and, thereafter, North America became a Mecca.In 1927, the
