L’article réfléchit à une définition opératoire de la notion d’historicité pour la sociocritique à partir d’un exemple concret : Vanina Vanini (1829), première nouvelle publiée par Stendhal. Il part des réticences de Claude Duchet, qui semble presque substituer à la notion d’historicité celle de cotexte, soit l’envisager comme une question de « représentations ». Nous suggérons qu’on gagne toutefois à ne pas réduire cette notion à un « problème de représentations ». L’argument se développe en trois temps. Nous montrons d’abord que l’historicité passe par le tissage des référents et des références, autrement dit la manière dont le texte présente sa situation historique : Vanina Vanini est lu cotextuellement comme un texte affichant un fort effet d’actualité tout en étant travaillé de références parfaitement inactuelles (La princesse de Clèves). L’historicisation du récit par cotextualisation découvre des temporalités multiples, non synchrones. Nous élargissons ensuite la notion d’historicité à une prise en compte de la manière dont le texte prend non seulement place mais sens dans l’Histoire, par l’articulation de son discours propre (sa « valeur » au sens sociocritique) aux enjeux historiques de son moment d’émergence : Vanina Vanini, texte du blocage historique, montre un Stendhal sceptique sur les chances d’évolution libérale, à court terme, de l’Italie. Nous suggérons enfin la nécessaire prise en compte des supports matériels de l’oeuvre comme composante essentielle de son historicité. À partir d’une macro-génétique de l’oeuvre stendhalienne, nous étudions les effets de sens induits par les supports et dispositifs médiatiques et éditoriaux de la nouvelle.
