New Promising Antimicrobials in Development and Novel Approaches for Treatment of Infections

Abstract
Despite the approval of several new antibiotics in the last several years, there is still an unmet need for treating multidrug-resistant bacteria, especially gram-negative bacilli. Of 15 antibiotics approved in the past decade, 5 have been de-listed because the pharmaceutical firms have gone bankrupt and only one was of an entirely new class of antibiotic. The World Health Organization has listed 77 new antibacterial agents in development, 45 traditional and 32 nontraditional agents. This chapter provides a brief review of these agents. Although not as pressing, there is still an exigency for new antifungal agents to combat azole- and echinocandin-resistant fungal pathogens, new antiviral agents to fight multidrug-resistant cytomegalovirus and human immunodeficiency virus, and new anti-parasitic agents for multidrug-resistant falciparum malaria, and neglected tropical parasitic diseases. This chapter also provides an insight of new antifungal, antiviral, and anti-parasitic agent in development.
