Avec la montée de pratiques variées de publication (de mise à disposition publique) de la littérature, il paraît nécessaire de mieux cadrer et définir ce que l’on appelle de plus en plus fréquemment « arts littéraires », dénomination qui renvoie à l’idée de « littérature vivante », majoritairement déployée hors du livre. Une meilleure attestation de ces pratiques suppose de les situer dans les milieux littéraires nord-américains et européens, d’examiner l’état des discours critiques à leur sujet et de réfléchir plus avant à leur saisie terminologique. Textes littéraires spectacularisés, exposés et médiatisés : sous ces trois volets se regroupe l’ensemble des arts littéraires, selon le rapport que les textes entretiennent avec le support, le public et le contexte socioculturel. Une proposition d’inventaire et de classement des pratiques actuelles est soumise à la communauté, de façon à faire exister institutionnellement ces nouvelles formes de publication de la littérature.
