Abstract
An overstatement of five per cent rise in the cost of living is of very little consequence to Protectionists who love to talk of “millions of factories standing idle,” and “millions of people flying from Free Trade every year.” The sovereign of the American and of the Canadian would each have ten holes, each hole representing the loss of a shilling’s worth of gold – while the sovereign of the Britisher would be the heaviest of all, having only three holes in it. Verily, “Protection” has fallen into the pit in which he sought to entrap others. Under Free Trade toiling masses have gained a degree of comfort and independence never dreamed of in the days of Protection. In conclusion, the author challenge Protection to prove that the general level of wages is not higher, and the hours of labor shorter in Free Trade England than in any Protectionist country in Europe.
