Envelhecer um processo vital inerente a todos os seres humanos. A velhice uma etapa da vida, parte integrante de um ciclo natural, constituindo-se como uma experincia nica e diferenciada da qual o ser humano fica mais susceptvel ao adoecimento. As doenas cardiovasculares aparecem em primeiro lugar entre os motivos de morte no Brasil e para o seu desenvolvimento so apontados como fatores de riscos, fatores predisponentes e fatores casuais, so eles: aumento da concentrao de lipoprotena A, fibrinognios, homocistena, sedentarismo, tabagismo, hipertenso arterial, dislipidemias, diabetes melittus, obesidade e hbitos relacionados ao estilo de vida e os predisponentes hereditariedade, sexo, idade e etnia. Os estudos apontam a hiper-homocisteinemia como fator de risco importante e independente para o desenvolvimento de doenas cardiovasculares, e esse agravo pode ter relao direta com fatores dietticos. OBJETIVO: Compreender por meio de reviso bibliogrfica a influncia da deficincia de cobalamina, cido flico e piridoxina nos nveis plasmticos de homocistena e na formao da placa de ateroma em idosos. METODOLOGIA: Trata-se de um estudo bibliogrfico sistemtico, realizado atravs de artigos cientficos nas bases de dados SCIELO, LILACS e Google Acadmico. Foram utilizados os seguintes descritores: "idoso", "hiper-homocisteinemia", "cido flico", "homocistena" e "aterosclerose". As expresses de pesquisa foram construdas com nove combinaes de dois descritores cada. Foram selecionados artigos originais publicados em idiomas ingls, portugus e espanhol. Aps avaliao, dezoitos artigos foram selecionados para serem tabulados e discutidos. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSO: Mediante as anlises levantadas dos artigos estudados, pode-se observar que existe uma relao importante com o aumento dos nveis de homocisteina no sangue na formao da placa de ateroma e a principal causa dessa elevao seria a deficincia de cobalamina e cido flico, acreditando-se que a carncia de piridoxina no tenha tanta influncia nos nveis plasmticos de homocisteina.
