Abstract
Efek samping anetesi telah dilaporkan pada hewan setelah terpapar semua agen anestesi umum yang umum digunakan. Otak mungkin sangat rentan terhadap toksisitas anestesi selama sinaptogenesis puncak (pada kehamilan dan masa bayi). Studi pada manusia tentang hasil perkembangan saraf jangka panjang setelah anestesi umum pada anak usia dini melaporkan temuan yang kontradiktif. Masih belum jelas apakah data hewan dapat diekstrapolasi ke manusia. Studi observasional pada manusia telah menunjukkan hasil yang beragam terkait dengan fungsi kognitif pada anak-anak yang menjalani anestesi. Dalam beberapa penelitian, hasil klinis yang positif ditunjukkan dengan tidak adanya perbedaan fungsi kognitif antara anak-anak yang terpajan dan tidak terpajan anestesi.
