Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Halfway Up a Tree David Wagoner I’m reconsidering my position here halfway toward the kite my daughter wants rescued and brought back. I’m holding on to the main stem of this maple with one hand and, with the other, to the frazzled end of a string that needs no magic of Ariadne to show me the way. There it is, as clear as what’s left of daylight. And back down on earth, someone I love is looking up and wanting me to keep going and, so far, believing in me. Inuit shamans knew the world was a kind of tree, that they’d been born there and could still fly back if they needed to be refreshed with the wind and lightning of the gods. I’m being winded and rained on unemphatically as it happens now, and the question of the day is what’s going to happen if I climb down without it. What in her world will she make of me after that but a lame sequence of images of a half-a-loaf benefactor descending empty-handed out of the sky? Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
