Abstract
Comme des milliers de ses compatriotes français dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle et le début du XXe siècle, la famille Goudron quitte son pays natal—le massif forestier et montagneux des Ardennes à la frontière de la Belgique—et migre au Canada où elle donnera libre cours à son esprit d’entreprise. En effet, des membres de cette famille mettront sur pied et exploiteront des établissements industriels (manufactures de boulons, fonderie, fabrique d’aliments pour bétail, scierie, manufacture de traitement et d’empaquetage de tabac) et commerciaux (quincailleries, brûlerie, commerce de miel). Au gré des opportunités, mais aussi de leurs déboires, les Goudron font preuve d’une grande mobilité dans l’espace : de Montréal, leur point d’arrivée au Canada, la plupart des membres de la famille déménagent à Berthierville dans la région du lac Saint-Pierre. Après coup, deux des fils quittent le Québec pour la Colombie-Britannique, pour ensuite revenir à Montréal dans le cas de l’un d’eux. La trajectoire des Goudron révèle aussi le rôle central de la famille dans le processus migratoire et dans la création et la bonne marche des entreprises. Abstract: From 1875 until the first years of the twentieth century, as Frenchmen by the thousands fled their native fields for a more propitious land, the Goudrons followed their example, leaving behind the forests and mountains of the Ardennes region, near the Belgian border, to sail to Canada, trusting in their entrepreneurial mindset to overcome all challenges. Of the Goudron family, some went into primary industries (smelting, sawmills), while others showed a preference for manufacturing (bolts, cattle feed, tobacco processing and packaging) or retailing (building materials, coffee roasting, honey products). Throughout their many successes and setbacks, spatial mobility was a main determinant in their lives as, having hardly set down at their point of arrival in Montréal, most of the family went on to Berthierville in the Lake Saint-Pierre region. Two of the sons soon left the province of Québec for British Columbia, though one of them came back later to Montréal. Following the Goudrons in their journey, one learns how central the role of the family is in the migration process, and in the set-up and operation of business undertakings.
