Abstract
Este artículo examina la descripción de la naturaleza y el paisaje americano en La Araucana, con la intención de mostrar la relevancia – para la configuración del poema – de la experiencia vital del autor durante los dieciocho meses de su estadía en el sur de Chile. Examina lo que ha señalado la crítica al respecto, concluyendo que, en general, ésta pondera en exceso las resonancias clásicas y el imaginario literario y minimiza el rol de la experiencia del territorio que vivió Ercilla. El artículo entrega antecedentes geográficos de los distintos sectores del territorio que Ercilla recorrió durante su estadía (Quiriquina, cordillera de Nahuelbuta, viaje de ida y regreso “al confín del mundo”), y muestra que el poeta sí tuvo ojos para el paisaje local, y que la naturaleza influyó en los acontecimientos que se narran y en cómo estos son narrados.
