Abstract
El artículo analiza un episodio de La Araucana que tiene un carácter histórico, si debe estimarse histórico lo que corroboran varios relatos independientes entre sí. Sostenemos que, sin forzar la historia, Ercilla construye con este episodio, de manera tal vez deliberada, una tragedia. Por su forma externa, la pieza tal vez es análoga a la de una tragedia en tres actos, como la Numancia de Cervantes. Corroboran esta analogía su forma interna, puesto que se estructura en torno a una peripecia y a un reconocimiento, siguiendo la pauta aristotélica; los efectos que busca provocar, de horror y compasión y los motivos que en ella aparecen y que tienen parentesco con motivos épicos de signo trágico, como el asalto nocturno, el suicidio preferido a la rendición, el crimen humano que se repercute en una convulsión cósmica. Por último, el episodio es trágico como símbolo de un fracaso político que se traduce por una guerra sin fin.
