Abstract
Intraperitoneal (IP) administration of plasma is popular among veterinarians working with neonatal llamas and alpacas. This technique offers a time efficient method for administration of plasma without the need to catheterize the jugular vein. IP cannulas can be useful in crias <30 days old for administration of predetermined volumes of fluids. Lateral recumbency with or without sedation depending on the condition of the patient is recommended. Sedation may be required but should be used cautiously depending on the medical condition of the animal. Visceral perforation is the most significant concern, and this can be life threatening. Understanding of abdominal anatomy of the camelid will minimize the risk. The llama or alpaca should be monitored for 24 hours for evidence of adverse events including colic, lethargy, fever, anorexia, and recumbency.
