Abstract
After Omar Khadr's 2002 capture in Afghanistan, my engagement with the issue was minimal and restricted to signing petitions from time to time.In mid-November 2009, I was one of about 250 who stood in the chill of an outdoor rally and marched in support of Omar Khadr at Edmonton's Churchill Square.This interfaith activist event was a collaboration organized by Charlene Schraf of Amnesty International, the Generation of Change Group at Al Rashid Mosque (Canada's irst mosque established in 1938), and students from the Micah Action and Awareness Student Society (MAASS) at the King's University College, a Christian-based institution.Inspired by this gathering, I sent out an invitation to contribute to a book about Omar Khadr.A few weeks later, the distinguished Canadian writer George Elliott Clarke was the irst to promise a poem.In April 2010, I attended his Banff Centre workshop on creative non-iction where I wrote about Omar Khadr in the company of a wonderful group of women writers and with the support of
