“An insightful metaphor offers a more direct road to a complex action than a detailed, literal description ever could” (260). John Paul Ito’s words reflect what many have witnessed in pedagogy, journalism, or academic writing: the communicative power of metaphor. Focal Impulse Theory, Ito’s impressive volume on musical performance, meter, and the physical organization of time, largely uses metaphor to structure a theory that aims to have a broad impact on, and applicability to, analysis and performance of common-practice era Western art music. Focal impulses give rise to musicians’ organization of time in the performance of a musical work. Ito’s discussion of focal impulses is oriented toward theorists and performers, and the book’s subject matter is presented in a spiral fashion to facilitate this dual orientation. I begin this review by summarizing the detailed contents of Focal Impulse Theory, paying attention to where its spiral organization succeeds and where it suffers. I then situate the book amid current discussions concerning repertoire and methodology in the music theory discipline and survey some challenges I believe Focal Impulse Theory faces in reaching its intended readerships.1
