Abstract
Significance Smith’s United Conservative Party (UCP) provincial government was returned with a smaller majority in last month’s election but she is claiming the victory as a “strong mandate” for fighting Ottawa’s efforts to curb the use of fossil fuels, which are essential to Alberta’s economy. Impacts A sharply increased vote for the centre-left, now dominant in the two main cites, actuates the urban/rural divide in Albertan politics. Open jurisdictional confrontation between the federal and provincial governments will escalate as Smith starts a four-year term. The UCP is likely to experiment with private health care, bringing it into conflict with the federal Canada Health Act. A victory for Poilievre’s Conservative Party at the next federal election would reduce but not eliminate tensions with Alberta.
