The Architectonic of Reason: Purposiveness and Systematic Unity in Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, by Lea Ypi
Bibliographic record
Abstract
In the Critique of the Power of Judgment (1790), Kant tells us that, The purposiveness of nature is thus a special a priori concept that has its origin strictly in the reflecting power of judgment. For we cannot ascribe to the products of nature anything like a relation of nature in them to ends, but can only use this concept in order to reflect on the connection of appearances in nature that are given in accordance with empirical laws. (Kant 2000, 5:181) Kant here links the purposiveness of nature directly to the ‘reflecting power of judgment’, which he tells us ‘is under the obligation of ascending from the particular in nature to the universal’ (Kant 2000, 5:180) . It is thus distinct from the determining power of judgment, which acts to subsume the particular under the universal. Reflecting judgment, Kant argues, seeks unity among empirical laws of nature; the regulative representation of nature as purposively organized is how it does so.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
