Abstract
At once sinister and hilariously funny, darkly ominous and positively hopeful, One Yellow Rabbit’s superbly crafted performance of Thunderstruck, or The Song of the Say-Sayer is very possibly tragicomedy at its most eerie. With Linda Gaboriau’s finely tuned translation of Daniel Danis’s lyrical Le Chant du dire-dire in hand, One Yellow Rabbit premiered the play’s English version at home in Calgary at their Big Secret Theatre in February 1999, subsequently hopped over to the Traverse for the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and eventually, in December 2000, made their way to Toronto’s Factory Theatre, all under the astute direction of Blake Brooker. At its simplest, Thunderstruck is the story of the Lastings. After their adoptive parents are killed by lightning during a freak storm, three brothers (Rock, William and Fred-James) and a younger sister (Naomi) are left to raise themselves, while fending off the “Municipals,” their name for town officials and general busybodies.
