Abstract
Should historical accuracy be the aim of an artist who creates a work that is set in the past? The issue has recently sparked debate in the world of cinema, pitting those who defend this view—mostly professional historians—against the champions of creative licence. To my mind the answer lies in the purpose of the work: is it intended to be a reflection of a historical event or does it use the past largely as a captivating backdrop? Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar could just as well have been set in Renaissance England, and in some ways it was.
