Abstract
I have a dream, a longing in my heart. A dream that one day, at any given time of the year, I will be able to find at least one play that is filled with people who look like me – telling stories about me, my families, my friends, my communities and my cultures. I was seventeen the first time I read a book by an author of African descent and nineteen the first time I attended a Black play. I have also grown to believe that stories, in all of their forms, are nutrition for the soul. So this dream, this wish, while it comes out of a need for my progeny to have a different experience from my own, is also based on a very personal desire for my own continued nurturance. The AfriCanadian Playwrights’ Festival was founded as a means to enable this dream.
