Abstract
Vancouver’s Boca del Lupo and Mexico City’s San Banquito Teatro’s adaptation of Nikolai Erdman’s The Suicide (1929) retains the plot outline of the original but pastes astonishing physical work, multi-linguality and a video coda on Erdman’s play. Erdman’s comedy, banned in the Soviet Union until 1987 for its “subversive” potential, follows unemployed Semyon (Lucas Myers), his wife Maria (Diana Karenina) and nagging mother-in-law Serafima (Camille Gingras), as a host of political and aesthetic extremists try to convince Semyon to commit suicide in honour of their own agenda.
