Abstract
I first met Judith Thompson when she was my professor for an Acting Studio course at the University of Guelph. We were performing Hamlet and she directed me to reach the core of Ophelia’s madness by “standing in the blood” of my character. At her request, I went outside on a muddy spring evening and rolled in the slush until I felt physically agitated and a little uncivilized as students passed by me on their way to the library. I had taken a risk, leaving my safe, known body to inhabit another. When I returned to the stage, proud of my transformation, she informed me that I was still not quite monster enough. “Robyn, you do not have enough shit in your hair,” she said, offering me the kindest of smiles, and I went back outside to rummage through the leaves.
