Abstract
I’m lying on my back, huddled in with a group of nine or ten strangers in a small, dimly lit crawl space. I have headphones on, a soft, ethereal soundscape completing the sense of utter dislocation and isolation. A Jew feet above me there is a thick plate of glass, a low ceiling that, I gradually realize, is also the floor of another space, one that extends, like a narrow well or a vertical mine shaft, high above me, towards a capped opening. And as the light slowly begins to increase in Boca del Lupo’s surreal optical illusion, I see that there is a female body sprawled across the transparent ceiling /floor, its naked limbs flattened by its own weight and oddly, awkwardly twisted, as if buckled by a fall from a great height. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, it begins to twitch. She is alive, progressively aware of her predicament, increasingly animated, suddenly desperate. Can she see me? Perhaps. But her attention, ultimately, is on the man at the top of the shaft, who has drawn away the cap, revealing, by all impressions, distant clouds in an early evening sky. As she/I watch, he car fully arranges the harness (a Boca staple) that will lower him towards her. Towards me. Into the HIVE.
