Abstract
Michael Ondaatje has been directly involved in three attempts to bring his novel Coming Through Slaughter, first published in 1976, to theatrical life. Theatre Passe Muraille produced his first version on its main stage in 1980. Three years later, Ondaatje began work on a second adaptation, this time for a film production company. In 1987 director Richard Rose and dramaturge DD Kugler approached him with the idea of working collaboratively on a new stage version. This collaboration resulted in a third adaptation titled Coming Through Slaughter by Michael Ondaatje,1 produced in 1989 by the Necessary Angel Theatre Company at the Silver Dollar Tavern in Toronto.
