Abstract
Forcing the idea of Canadian-ness is an old habit in this country. Cultural, government or commercial institutions push products of national identity; they make policies, mandates and strategies that shoehorn these enigmatic and changing phenomena into tangible and material expressions of nationhood. Alan Filewod’s recent book, Performing Canada: A Nation Enacted in the Imagined Theatre brings this interesting problem of authentic and imagined production and reception into a stimulating critical perspective. Published as the first in a sub-series of monographs entitled “Critical Performance/s in Canada,” I enjoyed the study not just for its articulation and painstaking critique of our nation’s theatre and our theatre’s nation, but also for any omissions or assumptions which invite further study and healthy debate.
