Abstract
I am beginning this review with the words of cultural theorist, Slavoj Zizek, because in his articulation of the meeting of politics and the psyche, he admirably creates a framework for a discussion of Linda Griffiths’ play, Chronic. Griffiths’ play contains the potential for intriguing speculation about how a virus, as both an illness and a problem with your computer, can be considered a symptom, or a paradoxical element contained within our rational interaction with the world. As both our bodies and our computers are pushed to their utmost capability through a 7/24 routine, the point at which reason is embodied, both psycho-somatically and digitally, encounters its own unreason in the form of a virus. The virus is symptomatic in our contemporary culture because it exemplifies the paradox of our technological progress, digitally as well as biologically, and as Griffiths’ play seems to suggest, the best antidote is to embrace it.
