Abstract
In this informative study, André Loiselle traces a history of the relationship between Canadian stage drama and Canadian cinema, through an examination of cinematic adaptations from 1942 on. (This was the date of the limited release of Hilda Hooke Smith’s Here Will I Nest in London, Ontario [play written 1938; film dir. Melburn E.Turner].) After a thorough review of the past and present debate over the differences between the two media and their complex relationship, he offers a variety of case studies of works that will be known to students of Canadian theatre – no doubt better than to students of Canadian cinema, since the stage versions were for the most part far better received (critically and/or commercially) than their cinematic progeny.
