Abstract
The proverbial assertion that all good things come in threes apparently does not apply to Tomson Highway’s dramatic output. Following the startling success of The Rez Sisters and Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, Highway had every reason to believe that the third instalment of his projected seven-play Rez cycle, the musical Rose, would have theatre producers scrambling to get it staged. After all, it had most of the ingredients of Highway’s earlier plays – the salty Rez characters, the poignant mixture of gritty humour and cutting despair, the colourful language, the treatment of relevant social issues, an intriguing, multi-layered story – and so much more: music, dance, magical transformations, elaborate spectacle. But thirteen years after it was first conceived, Rose has yet to receive a professional production.
