Abstract
Sometimes the best way to understand a nation and what bonds people together toward a particular sense of nationhood is to know what breaks it all apart. Slavoj Žižek, a Slovenian scholar of philosophy and psychoanalysis, has combined firsthand knowledge of the political and ethnic antagonism that fuelled the social conflicts in the former Yugoslavia with a remarkable revision of ideology to argue that what breaks a country apart, especially along the lines of ethnic and cultural difference, is a collectively driven refusal of enjoyment. Zizek argues that the force that holds together a community cannot be reduced simply to the point of symbolic identification, the singing of the anthem, the flying of the flag, and so forth; rather, the bond linking together those aligned in nationhood always implies “a shared relationship toward a Thing, toward Enjoyment incarnated” (201).
