A name is called and the next reader stands and steps out of the crowd into the light of the stage. Clutching a sheaf of paper, approaching the mike slowly, warily — there are adjustments and hesitations; then an apology for what we are about to hear. The reader is preparing to bare his or her soul to a group of strangers in a bar, cafe or church basement somewhere in North America, and the soul always needs a little context.
