Abstract
If theatre consists of good story telling, then the acrobatic performances of DynamO Théâtre create great theatre. Ever since it was created in 1981, this company of jugglers, acrobats, mimes and clowns (who have since lost their traditional colourful make-up) has worked to create a language that can integrate elaborate movement with story telling. At the time of its founding (explains Robert Dion, who co-directs the company with Jacqueline Gosselin), the artistic team felt that creating an elaborate and challenging approach to movement was not enough. They also wanted to make use of the physical tools developed through their experimentation to explore a different form of story telling. DynamO Théâtre was at a crossroads. It either had to stick to a format resembling a collection of circus numbers or move to a more theatrical form of presentation. DynamO Theatre needed to find a way to orchestrate movement and virtuosity toward meaning and, if possible, emotion. Their solution: to fuse physical performances into full-length theatre presentations.
