Abstract
In March 2003 a festival at Toronto’s Harbourfront Theatre featured a wide variety of theatre and other performing arts groups all committed to the project of re-imagining the place of mental illness on stage.1 The Madness and Arts 2003 World Festival, organized by Toronto’s Workman Theatre Project (WTP) and co-presented with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, operated with an activist mandate: to gather artists from around the world who involve people with mental-illness experience in their work, who write about and perform plays with mental-illness themes or problems at their core and who actively seek to address assumptions about and the public stigma attached to mental illness. This is an activist agenda because it seeks both to connect artists with mental illness experience and interests and also to challenge negative stereotypes about mental illness.
