Abstract
For some time I have been investigating the historical relationship between theatre practice and urban space, mostly in the context of theatre in Toronto since 1967. It became apparent early in this research that the intersection between theatre and the city raised questions not only of geography but also of political economy. These questions, however, highlighted a problem: if the critical literature on theatre and space is expanding rapidly – though not always rigorously – it would be hard to locate a similar critical interest in theatre and political economy. There is undoubtedly exemplary research being undertaken in the field of theatre and economics (the best instance of which is perhaps Tracy Davis’ outstanding work on the economic history of the British stage), but analyses of the ways in which theatre negotiates state actions and broader economic policy are few and far between.2
