Abstract
When I started reading the articles for this issue on spoken word, I expected to encounter an intense interest in the textuality of contemporary poetry, borne out in skilled applications of advanced literary analysis. I imagined myself, a few weeks before the looming “due at press” date, sifting through clever dissections of poetic devices, thick descriptions of word choice and imagery, and exhaustive semiotic decodings of structure and syntax. However, the common theme that emerged in the articles for this section was not textual analysis but rather the conditions of production that govern the staging and circulation of contemporary spoken-word performance.
