Abstract
In her recent book, Science on Stage, Kirsten Shepherd-Barr points out that science plays may be the contemporary way of bringing politics back to the stage. She suggests that, because scientific controversies over ethical issues are very much in the public eye, bringing these debates to light through theatre has “restored to the stage much of its former status as an influential art form” (10). According to Shepherd-Barr, the political implications of scientific and technical developments have become an important part of the drama in these plays. Furthermore, she believes that science playwrights share a common interest in the concept of justice and, following Dürrenmatt, that “justice is a question of what to do with the power that stems from scientific knowledge” (for Dürrenmatt, see Peppard 72).
