Abstract
Here are three plays that deal with the clashing of cultures in situations of war and social injustice. All three leave the reader or audience member with a striking set of images and an invitation to consider his or her own position in relation to the story. In all three, I was struck by the consistent use of the motif of infant death, of songs and of staging notes that place little importance on accurate physical representation of time and place. These are plays where linear notions of time and space are rejected for forms of time and space that work according to the needs of the story. All three take a flexible approach to the portrayal of several time periods, a powerfully subjective choice.
