Abstract
Easily the most interesting, inventive and challenging production at the Stratford Festival in 1999 was Richard Rose’s revival of David Young’s Glenn. Rose’s carefully orchestrated and choreographed staging of Young’s sophisticated script about the modernist wish to do away with, transcend or control material mediations between conception and expression might have served as a commentary on the gap between the Festival’s professed and publicized ideals and their playing out on the Festival’s three stages. Certainly no other production in 1999 at Stratford could match this one’s power, impact or intelligence, or indeed could claim much representational or thematic connection to any kind of real world.
