Abstract
Sky Gilbert begins his memoir Ejaculations from the Charm Factory with a question. He expresses his own “trepidation” about the piece, wondering what about Sky Gilbert’s life would “hold anyone’s interest through a whole book” He answers his own question aptly – it is the “important period of time” in which he has lived and worked. The strength of this text lies in Gilbert’s thoughtful and thorough analyses of and reflections on the events and atmosphere of this very important twenty-year period from the late seventies through the late nineties. The weakness lies in the gossipy, exploitative tone of much of the book – a book which would have better served Buddies in Bad Times, Sky Gilbert and his readers if it had pushed the boundaries of analysis a little further and avoided the tendency towards name-dropping a little more.
