Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

It may seem odd - and perhaps even downright inappropriate - to find a review of Disney’s blockbuster show The Lion King in Canadian Theatre Review. Notwithstanding CTR’s spectacular history in showcasing, archiving and promoting the work of Canadian theatre artists, it strikes me that The Lion King, maybe despite itself, makes an interesting contribution to contemporary theatre in Canada. Certainly the sheer numbers of tickets sold for this production - one can expect to wait around five or six months for “good” seats - suggest this point in a couple of different ways: The Lion King will be seen by more Canadians than any other play in 2000-2001 (and, in all likelihood, beyond); moreover, its non-Canadian audience (the audience on the Saturday night that I saw the production had a big contingent from Michigan) brings its tourist dollars into the Princess of Wales Theatre and thus directly supports the many Canadian actors in this show.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
