Abstract
By the spring of 2001, I had been living in Saskatchewan for almost four years. During this time, I discovered that a province famous for its slow decline of population - particularly of youth leaving for lucrative employment and bright futures elsewhere - and for its photographs of barren-looking homesteads and soon-to-be torn-down grain elevators was actually a place blessed with absence. Saskatchewan’s abandoned buildings are potentially some of the greatest archival treasures that exist in all of Canada. Several decades of relatively slow economic growth have created an environment where what remains from the past has been left, in some cases virtually undisturbed, in the very spot where it was placed years ago. While many see old, empty buildings as a measure of decline and even the death of a culture, I see them for their immanence as a performative archive and as a resource for re-birth through reconsideration of what remains of both the building and its embedded culture.
