Abstract
I’m pleased to start this section of Views and Reviews with a very strong statement that directly relates to the theme of this issue. Joanne Buckley, an avid theatre fan who is confined to a wheelchair as a result of cerebral palsy, has a lot to say about bodies on stage – both the super-abled and the disabled. Her comments remind us that the notion of “ability,” when applied to the body, must really be viewed as a continuum. Few of us in the audience are as able-bodied as the performers we see on stage, yet most of us revel in watching how performers use their bodies. Buckley helps us think through what may be going on here and asks all of us to think again about how audience members’ bodies are themselves engaged in the making of great theatre experiences.
