Abstract
Studies of immigrant theatre are lacking, despite Toronto’s multi-ethnic make-up and numerous multicultural and ethnic theatre groups, both amateur and professional. Immigrant-ethnic theatre is a discourse that both reflects and responds to the immediate and larger community. Italian theatre in Toronto is no different. The following is a summary of the main Italian Canadian theatre groups in Toronto after World War II. The chronology does not include the production of Italian plays in general, productions by visiting Italian companies or forms of theatre organized on an occasional basis by Italian Canadian social and cultural clubs of various villages and regions. The main sources for the chronology are newspapers such as The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail and Corriere Canadese, as well as smaller Italian newspapers, many of which were started in Toronto after the war and are no longer in existence, available in private collections.
