Abstract
Aaron Bushkowsky points out in the introduction to his collection The Waterhead, and Other Plays that he likes to write about dysfunctional families. These plays are no exception. The book contains a memory play, The Big Blue Bird, in which a man remembers his grandfather and his father; an extended monologue for a male actor, which bears the title of the collection, The Waterhead; and finally, a slightly shorter monologue for a female, entitled Between Mothers. As a collection, these pieces work effectively to illuminate the pain and confusion experienced by each member within a dysfunctional family: grandfather, father and son in the first; son and potential father in the second; mother and daughter in the final piece. Bushkowsky’s characters all long to bond with family members in some impossible, idealized way, and their attempts are frustrated by human imperfection. The plays are dark, their worlds plagued with mental illness, physical illness and even death. Within them, families are revealed to be rather arbitrary arrangements, where individuals are absorbed in their own problems, and the gaps between people can never be fully bridged.
