Abstract

Pearl is an ancient organic gem with unique beauty, and has been treated as a treasure since ancient times. From a scientific point of view, pearls are produced in the bodies of Pteria  and Pinctada  molluscs. The pearls are rich in color and diverse in shape, and are formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) containing minerals (aragonite) beads produced by endocrine. This paper summarizes the biological characteristics and formation mechanism of pearl during its growth and development; The chemical composition, biological activity and internal and external causes of pearl are clarified to reveal their formation mechanism and the physiological and biochemical characteristics of pearls;   The physiological and biochemical characteristics of pearls and their main chemical components are analyzed to provide scientific basis for improving the quality of cultured pearls in China and the follow-up research and development of new composite materials.
